Car import from Belgium
Belgium is an attractive market for vehicle imports: the selection is large, prices are often lower than in Switzerland, and the Belgian VAT of 21% can be fully reclaimed after the import.
Why import from Belgium?
Belgium is one of the preferred source countries for Swiss car buyers. Large dealers offer a wide range of new and used vehicles – often at prices significantly below Swiss levels. Belgian VAT is 21%. If you buy from a VAT-registered dealer, you can reclaim this amount in full after exporting from Belgium – which significantly reduces your import costs.
The import process from Belgium
Importing from Belgium follows the same proven process as importing from Germany: 1. You find your chosen vehicle at a Belgian dealer and sign the purchase contract. 2. We obtain all necessary documents (CoC, certificate of origin) and handle the Belgian export customs clearance. 3. Our transport partner collects the vehicle and brings it insured to Switzerland. 4. We handle Swiss import customs clearance, the CO₂ levy, the MFK roadworthiness inspection and registration.
Costs and handling
Importing from Belgium incurs the same Swiss taxes as importing from Germany: 8.1% Swiss VAT and 4% automobile tax on the vehicle value. The Belgian VAT (21%) can be reclaimed from the dealer. For transport from Belgium, allow slightly more time and higher transport costs than for a German import – both depend on the pick-up location. Use our calculator for a full cost overview.
